After sewer main break, authorities warn of New River pollution in Fort Lauderdale

Florida Department of Environmental Protection warns of sewage in river

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ After a sewer main break Saturday in Fort Lauderdale's Tarpon River neighborhood, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued a warning.

The Florida DEP is asking residents to avoid water-related activities in an area of the New River along Cooley's Landing Park.

Fort Lauderdale employees were also asking swimmers, fishermen and jet-skiers to stay away from the New River in the vicinity of the Southwest Seventh Avenue and Fourth Street bridge. Ā

"This precautionary advisory will remain in effect until further notice," city spokesman Matt Little said in a statement issued at 1:30 p.m.Ā

To deal with the 30-inch sewer spill flooding on Saturday morning, Fort Lauderdale police officers used crime scene tape to close an area of Seventh Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

"Motorists are advised to detour around the area and pedestrians are advised to avoid standing water at the site of the sewer main break," Little said.Ā

Little said workers stopped the leak and did not interrupt sewer service.

For more information, call the city's 24-hour customer service center at 954-828-8000,.Ā
