BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Broward County commissioners have approved new measures regarding transportation companies that operate for-hire vehicles, such as Uber or Lyft.
On Tuesday, the commission agreed to proposed terms that would require more thorough background checks for drivers and stricter mechanical inspections for vehicles. The requirements will now be drafted into an ordinance by the County Attorney's office ahead of a public hearing and future commission approval.

If approved, background checks of drivers would include local, statewide, and national criminal records. Broward County currently only conducts statewide checks every two years. Drivers would be responsible for paying for the costs of the additional checks.
County commissioners would also develop a checklist including the requirements each car used by for-hire drivers must meet. It would cover both mechanical and aesthetic inspections.
According to a news release from a county representative, the steps are being taken to "enhance the safety of residents and visitors" who use such services.
