MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — An active investigation is ongoing in southwest Miami-Dade County.
It was happening Thursday morning in the area of the 15700 block of southwest 140th Street.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, an agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement who was on duty was inside his car when someone who was standing on the street began to strike the window of the agent’s vehicle.
Deputies said the agent got out of his car and an altercation between the two began immediately, with the individual slamming the agent to the ground and climbing on top of him.
During the altercation, deputies said the agent discharged his firearm, striking the individual.
Crews with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and pronounced the individual deceased at the scene.
A nearby school, Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School, was placed on a temporary lockdown that has since been lifted.
Officials with Miami-Dade County Public Schools told Local 10 News the lockdown was due to “non-school related police activity in the area.”
Video obtained by Local 10 News shows two men scuffling in the area near the school, and at one point in the video, what sounds like a gunshot is heard.
Soon after, MDSO deputies converged on the area, where a body could be seen covered by a tarp in the road.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said one person was treated at the scene but was not transported to an area hospital.
The FDLE agent has been placed on administrative leave, the agency confirmed, as is standard procedure.
