MARGATE, Fla. — A 31-year-old mother and her 2-year-old daughter died Sunday after they were struck by lightning in Margate, police said.
Margate police and Margate Fire Rescue personnel responded at about 2:30 p.m. to a 911 call about two people who had been struck by lightning and were found lying on a sidewalk near 7900 Northwest First St.
First responders immediately began treating the victims, including by performing CPR on them, according to police.
The woman, identified as Kenya Glasgow, was taken by Margate Fire Rescue to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach. The 2-year-old girl was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale with a police escort.
Despite efforts by first responders and medical personnel, both mother and daughter died shortly after arriving at the hospitals.
Prince Moody, who lives across the street, said he had just returned from picking up groceries when he heard the lightning strike.
“I heard the loudest lightning strike I could hear, thunder, and an orange glow went through my window,” Moody said.
Moody said he was thinking about the family as he stayed at the scene.
“Imagine the family that’s actually going through this. The father, you know. I have a kid and I can imagine. My thoughts and prayers,” he said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Margate Police Department.
Police expressed their condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims.
