Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said Jacob Johnson was arrested Thursday after investigators linked him to the armed robbery that they say occurred on July 31.

Deputies said they were called at about 7:15 p.m. that night to an apartment building near the 3100 block of Northwest 77th Street in the county’s Westgate area after the victim, who lives in the same apartment building as Johnson, reported that a man entered his vehicle, pointed a gun at his head and demanded his valuables.

Johnson entered through the left rear passenger door while the victim was sitting in his vehicle, according to the report.

The report states that Johnson pulled out a “two-tone revolver with a silver frame and black grip” and pressed it against the victim’s head.

Deputies said Johnson then pulled a 10-karat yellow gold Cuban-link chain from the victim’s neck while keeping the gun pressed against his temple.

They said the victim told deputies he feared for his life and felt as though he was being suffocated.

Deputies said the victim also surrendered two 10-karat yellow gold Cuban-link bracelets and a yellow gold ring depicting Our Lady of Charity to the suspect.

They said the victim estimated the jewelry that was stolen from him was worth about $113,000.

After the robbery, Johnson fled on foot toward a nearby parking garage, according to the report. The report states that the victim used his cellphone to record video of Johnson as he ran away.

Investigators said the victim believed Johnson lived in the apartment building because he saw him use a key fob to enter a secured door.

Investigators reviewed records associated with residents of the building and identified Johnson as a “person of interest,” according to the report.

The report states that apartment management staff were shown images and video of the suspect. One staff member “immediately recognized the depicted individual” and referred to him as “Mr. Jacob,” deputies said.

Surveillance footage from the building also appeared to corroborate the victim’s account, according to the report.

The footage showed Johnson leaving his apartment on the third floor just before 7 p.m. wearing clothing consistent with what the suspect was wearing in the victim’s video and photographs, the report stated.

Deputies said shortly after the robbery was reported, Johnson was seen returning to his apartment.

The victim was later shown a photographic lineup and identified Johnson as the person who robbed him, the report states.

Investigators also found that Johnson had five previous felony convictions. His most recent conviction was a 2018 Palm Beach County case involving possession of cocaine, according to the report.

Because of those prior felony convictions, Johnson was prohibited from possessing a gun or ammunition, deputies said.

They said a search warrant was conducted around 6:55 a.m. Thursday at Johnson’s home before he was taken into custody without incident and transported to MDSO headquarters.

During a post-Miranda interview, Johnson admitted to being involved in the robbery, according to the report. However, he told investigators the handgun he used was a “fictitious replica cap gun,” deputies said.

Jail records show Johnson is facing one count each of armed robbery with a firearm or deadly weapon, first-degree grand theft while armed, illegal possession of a weapon as a post-convicted felon and armed burglary.

As of Friday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.”
