POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A 31-year-old Pompano Beach man is facing charges after he allegedly physically battered two children.
It happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the apartment building where the victims and the suspect, identified as Enrique Diaz, both live.
Authorities did not provide details on the location of the apartment building in order to shield the victim’s information.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene after receiving reports that a man had struck two children.
Upon arrival, investigators said they spoke with the victims, who told them they were sitting outside their unit when Diaz exited his apartment. The children told deputies the man appeared to stumble while walking toward them and that he was holding a beer.
According to Diaz’s arrest form, “in an unprovoked attack, (he) flicked” one of the children on the head and slapped him, causing the child to cry and run inside his apartment. Deputies said Diaz then set his sights on the second child.
Per the arrest form, Diaz went to the second child and “proceeded to grab his head while aggressively squeezing, causing pain to the top of his head, and then slapped him.”
According to investigators, the children told deputies they were unsure why Diaz struck them, saying that they had never had previous contact outside of being neighbors.
Diaz is now facing two charges of child abuse without great bodily harm. He was granted a bond of $5,000 on the child abuse charges, but he is being held at the Broward Main Jail on an immigration hold.
