Detectives said the shooting occurred at about 12:15 a.m. near the intersection of Southwest Sixth Street and 328th Avenue.

They said Homestead police officers responded to the area of Southwest Sixth Avenue and Seventh Street regarding a ShotSpotter alert.

Upon arrival, officers located a man, who they identified as Gregory Hillman, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews arrived at the scene and pronounced him dead.

A Local 10 News crew was at the scene as police investigated. The area was taped off, and a yellow tarp covered the body of the victim.

The shooting was reported near several businesses, including a food mart and a beauty supply store.

One of Hillman’s friends, a woman named Audrey, said she heard the gunshots from the second floor of the building.

Audrey told Local 10 that she knew Hillman by the nickname “Shortman” and described him as someone who was always willing to help others.

“He clean(s) up around here, and do anything for anybody,” Audrey said. She described the shooting as “senseless.”

Mahadi Hasan, who was working at a nearby convenience store, also said he heard the gunshots. He told Local 10 News through a translator that he was scared.

Video from the scene showed deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and Homestead police investigating as the intersection remained taped off through the night and into the daylight hours.

Audrey said Hillman was someone she could always count on and that she wants to see justice for her friend.

“I don’t know the worst part. I don’t know what happened. (I) Just see somebody you know dead. (It’s) just sad,” Audrey said. “Good guy, good guy.”

When asked who would shoot Hillman and why, Audrey said, “I don’t know. I can’t figure it out.”

No other details about a possible suspect or the circumstances surrounding the shooting were immediately released.

Authorities said that MDSO’s Homicide Bureau has taken over the investigation.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
