MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A suspect was taken into custody after allegedly firing a gun at a detective in Miami Gardens early Monday morning and then leading police on a pursuit from Miami Gardens into Opa-locka, authorities said.
According to Miami Gardens Police Chief Delma Noel-Pratt, officers responded to a home at about 9:50 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report about shots being fired at the home during a domestic violence incident.
The suspect returned to the area while a detective was there at about 4:15 a.m. Monday and shot at the detective, Noel-Pratt said.
“As standard protocol, our detective came out to the scene,” she said. “The call happened to be involving a boyfriend/girlfriend, so it was a domestic violence call.”
The police chief said the detective returned fire and the pursuit started, with the suspect driving into Opa-locka.
According to a news release from the Opa-locka Police Department, its officers were called to assist Miami Gardens police during the vehicle pursuit.
The chase eventually ended near Northwest 107th Street and Northwest 17th Avenue, where authorities took the suspect into custody, according to Opa-locka police.
A separate scene was established near Northwest 22nd Avenue and Northwest 135th Street, where police said a Miami Gardens officer was involved in a crash during the pursuit.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene, but the officer was not injured.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity, but confirmed that the suspect was injured in the shooting and was transported to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries.
No officers or detectives were injured during the shooting and chase, the Miami Gardens police chief confirmed.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
