SUNRISE, Fla. — A speeding driver crashed a Mercedes-Benz into a Sunrise home late Sunday night, leaving part of the house destroyed, neighbors said.
The crash happened in the 6200 block of Northwest 12th Street.
The impact tore through multiple rooms of the home, leaving debris scattered throughout a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. Car parts from the Mercedes were mixed among personal belongings inside the damaged residence.
Neighbors said the woman renting the home was inside her bedroom when the car came plowing in.
Neighbor Alexis Almonte, who lives next door, said the collision sounded like an explosion.
“It sounded like a bomb,” Almonte told Local 10 News.
The victim and Almonte said speeding has long been a problem along nearby Northwest 63rd Avenue.
Almonte said he rushed outside after hearing the crash and found the victim injured.
“I see the car over there. I see the lady on the floor,” he said. “She got cut. She’s lucky to be alive.”
A temporary support beam has since been installed inside the home to help keep the damaged structure standing.
According to neighbors, this is not the first vehicle to crash into the home.
“It’s the third time someone hit the house,” Almonte said, adding that residents have previously asked the City of Sunrise to install a speed bump or other traffic-calming measures.
While Local 10 was at the scene Monday morning, several vehicles were seen speeding through the area.
Almonte urged drivers to slow down and remember families live in the neighborhood.
“There’s people living over here — children,” he said. “We have to take care of each other.”
Sharon Bermudez, who owns the home, was there with some people helping her clean up on Monday.
“He crashed right into the girl’s bed, and the car ended up on top the girl,” she said.
Investigators have not said what caused the crash or whether the driver will face any charges.
There were no visible skid marks on the roadway, suggesting the driver may not have braked before impact.
The extent of the homeowner’s injuries has not been released.
