MIAMI — A South Florida police officer was hospitalized early Sunday morning after being involved in an overnight crash.
It happened at approximately 3:20 a.m. in the area of Southwest Seventh Street and 12th Avenue.
According to Miami police, the officer was responding to a call when his vehicle was T-boned by someone driving a silver SUV.
First responders rushed the injured officer to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Officer Kenia Fallat, a spokeswoman for the police department, confirmed that the officer suffered a pelvic fracture and possible lung issues.
Residents Reinaldo Machado and his wife, Ercilia Ortiz, heard the loud crash.
It was their grandson who ran out the door towards the crash, to try and help the officer.
“When he came back, he told me, ‘Mommy, it’s a bad, bad crash. They hit the car, went into the building and somebody crashed the officer,’” said Ortiz. “And the officer was ... the eyes were open and suddenly he closed the eyes. I don’t know if he faint or something, but he was very hurt and they couldn’t take him out. Eleven people trying to help him out, but they couldn’t.”
Authorities said the officer was alert and is considered in stable condition.
There has been no word on the health condition of the driver who caused the crash or whether they will be facing any charges, but police said that driver did remain at the scene.
