SUNRISE, Fla. — Several well-known members of the Democratic Party met Monday night in Broward County at a townhall meeting for the West Broward Democrat Club at Flamingo Park in Sunrise, where redistricting in the state was a main topic of discussion.
Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was asked about what district she will choose to run for.
“I’m reaching out to leaders across our community and talking to them about how they feel to about what they think about the idea of who represents them,” she said.
It’s possible she runs in District 20, which has historically had an African-American representative.

Tension was seemingly already building as former District 20 Rep. Shelia Cherfilus-McCormick, who was at Monday’s event, said she is running once again for the seat she resigned from in April, just prior to an Ethics Committee hearing amid allegations of stealing.
“There’s a fight in the entire south to make sure Black voices are not diluted and Black representation is being held,” Cherfilus-McCormick said.
The discussion comes as voters of District 20 made their stance clear, some of whom were wearing shirts that read “Protect Black Representation.”
“For 34 years, we’ve had Black representation and I think we should keep it that way,” said Lauderhill resident Herbert Waters.
The conversation is taking focus as Florida’s new congressional districts, drafted by Gov. Ron DeSantis, are expected to give Republicans better odds of winning four more seats in the House this November.
Wasserman Shultz has yet to officially announce which district she will be vying for.
“I’m not on anyone’s timetable,” she said. “I’ll have the conversations that I need to and will reach a decision on short order.”
Qualifying closes June 12, which is when voters will know who is running for their district.
