BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Crews responded to a brush fire that ignited in Broward County on Sunday.

The flames were located to the northwest of the intersection of Okeechobee Road and Krome Avenue.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, officials said the fire had burned around 4,800 acres.

Roxanne Gill lives with her boyfriend and her 1-year-old near where the flames were burning.

She says shortly after the fire broke out Sunday, it overtook the dirt road that leads to their home, trapping them.

“We couldn’t leave, the fire was blocking the dirt road,” she said. “There’s no leaving. The only way to leave was to take an airboat.”

Gill said they have dealt with fires in the past, but never this close.

“It was huge, there was so much smoke, we could hear it crackling, that’s how bad it was. I had to hose down my house. Everyone was hosing down their trailers before the fire department came,” she said. “I was scared. I was getting all my important stuff out of our house and I was freaking out, asking everyone if I should take the baby, if I should leave, and there’s no way of leaving. I was super scared.”

Police in Pembroke Pines warned residents about smoke that was heading toward the Lake Holly area, near Pines Boulevard and US-27.

Fire rescue crews were staging in the area as a precaution in case the fire approached and became a danger.
