It all unfolded Saturday morning off Crandon Park.

Both operator Neil Schwabe, 54, of Miami, and passenger Claudia Balmaseda Orellanes, 33, of Coral Gables, were thrown overboard.

Balmaseda Orellanes was killed. Schwabe, who lives in the Coconut Grove neighborhood, was hurt.

Fire crews threw a line at the propellers of the out-of-control boat to slow it down, and then law enforcement helped stop it before towing it away.

It was the second deadly boat crash in a week. State wildlife officers are investigating a fatal hit-and-run from Wednesday off Miami Beach.

Davide Veglia, 55, of North Miami, and his teenage son were in a dinghy off Biscayne Point when a boat operator hit them and took off, killing Veglia and injuring his son.

Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced Monday night that the vessel had been located.

No arrests were announced, and the FWC said the investigation remains active.

Anyone with information on the hit-and-run is urged to call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922 or the Miami Beach Police Department at 305-673-7900.
