According to Miramar police, security personnel immediately detected and confiscated the weapon as the student entered the school, which is located at 3601 SW 89th Ave.

They said no ammunition was found in the student’s possession.

In a message to parents and guardians, Miramar High School Principal Winfred Porter said the school’s security team safely confiscated the weapon once a metal detector was activated and that the student was taken into custody without incident.

“I want to assure you this situation did not involve any threats toward our school, students or staff,” Porter wrote, in part. “The student will face appropriate school disciplinary measures.”

Porter also reminded parents to speak with their children about the severe consequences of bringing weapons or banned items onto campus and encouraged them to report anything suspicious.

Investigators said the Miramar Police Department is investigating the origin of the gun.

No injuries were reported and authorities have not immediately released additional information about the student.
