MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A woman is heartbroken after thinking she had been communicating with the love of her life, only to find out it was all a lie.
Videos showing the face of Miami Beach realtor Andres Asion were sent to the woman, but they were not actually from him.
“He was sending her direct videos with pretty much my voice dubbed and saying her name on the video it was kind of hard for her not to be able to believe it,” said Aison.
The videos were sent to a woman in the United Kingdom who told Local 10 News’ Christian De La Rosa over the phone she is mortified and did not want to do a recorded interview or be identified.
Asion says he found out what was going on when he got a call to his business line on Monday from the woman herself.
“I got an international call on my WhatsApp, I ignored it and then I got the same call right back,” Aison said. “I said ‘I don’t know you’ and he said, ‘Well we’ve been talking for a year what do you mean you don’t know me and I’m here now in Miami to see you.”
Asion met with her where they both realized the videos appear to have been generated by artificial intelligence.
“I played it for some friends and I played it for my parents and they said they probably would’ve thought it was me as well,” he said.
Local 10 News, called the suspected scammer’s phone number, but it appears to have been disconnected.
“To see it being used to be basically trick somebody else thinking that they were me was pretty freaky, and if they were doing it to me that means they can doing it to anybody,” said Asion.
Asion hopes people take not and lawmakers too, in order to find ways to protect the public against the threats of artificial intelligence.
