FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Brenda Fam, an outspoken conservative on the school board in blue Broward County, announced her resignation Tuesday.

Fam, an attorney by trade and Davie resident, was first elected to the board in 2022, representing District 6.
A letter submitted to Superintendent Howard Hepburn references the April 11 resignation of Alec Bogdanoff, the chair to the Superintendent’s Oversight Committee Task Force.
Referencing his letter, which cited “entrenched resistance, hostility to new perspectives and a culture that too often rewards control over progress” as a reason for leaving the volunteer position after three meetings, Fam said she’s experienced the same challenges while on the board.
“I have also encountered the same hostility and personal attacks for trying to improve the school climate and increase inclusivity of parents,” Fam wrote. “I also observed that if an individual does not agree with the current district culture of prioritizing social justice over academics, the current recognized quid pro quo, then they are targeted, dismissed, and ridiculed.”
She said, “No one who steps up to serve their community should be met with that kind of behavior.”
She also expressed “fear” for the district’s future, citing an “unprecedented” decline in enrollment and the district’s financial state, saying Broward County Public Schools “always appears to be in financial crisis and begins needing residents to pick up the tab” and that residents “cannot afford” a planned 10-year increase in property taxes or increases on impact fees on new home purchases.
“My greatest fear is that (the district) will seek a bail-out from residents in 2026 in the form of referendum funds from Broward County residents due to the (board’s) failure to implement a balanced budget and engaging in wasteful overspending,” she wrote.
She added, “I have old school values and was taught that you don’t buy what you can’t pay for. You don’t purchase things that you cannot afford.”
Fam said she’d “forever treasure” the “unique opportunity to stand up to” fellow board members and the Broward Teachers Union over school choice.
Fam’s resignation is effective May 1, according to the letter.
