He kicked off the historic voyage in Cuba, his first state visit and third official visit by a reining pope.

Cubans waved flags and chanted when the plane touched down in Havana.

Cuban leader Raul Castro then met Pope Francis.

On the streets of Havana, thousands of Cubans, many waving Vatican flags, turned out to see the man they call Papa Francisco.

The pontiff rode into Revolution Plaza, eager to take part in mass.

Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski was there, on the stage with Pope Francis.

Pope Francis served as a diplomat after five decades of tensions between the United States and Cuba.

He openly thanked Raul Castro for bringing the two governments together after more than 50 years.

Castro sat in the audience with Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez De Kirchner.
