New REAL ID requirement at airports also applies to TSA PreCheck passengers

TSA to require REAL ID starting May 7

MIAMI – Transportation Security Administration agents warned that people who do not have a REAL ID, including TSA PreCheck passengers, will not be allowed to board their domestic flights starting May 7.

REAL ID-compliant forms of identification include a Florida driver’s license or state ID card that has a star in the upper right corner, of a valid U.S. passport, or U.S. passport card.

Mark Howell, a TSA regional spokesperson, said those who show up to the airport without a REAL ID will face delays at security checkpoints and require identity verification.

“Florida was an early adopter of the REAL ID Act so a lot of people in the state already have theirs taken care of,” Howell said.

To help with demand in Miami-Dade County, Dariel Fernandez, the county’s tax collector, said the county transformed three tax collectors’ offices to offer driving license services.

Appointments for the office at 200 NW 2 Ave., in Downtown Miami, are available online.

“It’s another layer of security,” Fernandez said.

The county’s offices are not involved in driving tests or commercial licenses like the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles locations are.
