According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the armed robbery happened at around 2 a.m. at the Tom Thumb at 5690 Maloney Ave. on Stock Island.

An MCSO arrest report states that Johnathan Charles Shiadek, 35, of Marathon, went into the store, started drinking a Mountain Dew, bumped into and knocked over a stand of donuts, then grabbed a bag of Chex Mix and walked out of the store without paying.

Deputies said a clerk and multiple customers walked out to confront Shiadek, who then pulled out a box cutter and started “swinging” it at them.

Multiple people called 911 as Shiadek walked towards U.S. 1, deputies said.

After deputies arrived at the store, multiple people pointed towards Shiadek in the direction of Second Street.

Deputies said they detained the convicted felon and found the box cutter, along with a wound on his right hand after he said he “accidentally cut himself.”

“Shiadek uttered several statements to me in an effort to explain the situation, including that he had been cornered by the store clerk and pulled out the knife because he thought he was being jumped,” an MCSO deputy wrote. “Shiadek stated he does not carry the knife for the purpose of being a weapon but will use it as that if he needs to.”

Deputies said Shiadek would later claim that the store clerk touched him and “squared up to him” and claimed he felt “surrounded” by the clerk and customers, leading him to pull the box cutter.

“Shiadek stated he did chase one of them down the street, and stated he did it because he thought he would lose a fight,” the deputy wrote. “Shiadek did not believe his pulling of a knife was wrong, and repeated statements of his belief that the clerk should not have touched him to get his attention.”

Deputies arrested Shiadek on charges including armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a weapon.

He also had a warrant out for his arrest

As of Thursday he was being held in MCSO’s Key West jail facility with no bond listed.
