DAVIE, Fla. – “I am James. I know what I am doing.”
That’s what Florida Highway Patrol troopers say James Lawrence Case III said in response to a passenger who told him to slow down as he drove west in an Audi S5 at a lightning-fast 155 mph down State Road 84 in Davie in January.

Moments later, troopers said the 20-year-old Plantation man would crash into another vehicle, ejecting and killing another one of his passengers.
Troopers arrested Case on six felony charges, including one count of vehicular homicide, on Monday.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by Local 10 News on Wednesday, the crash happened just before 2:45 a.m. on Jan. 25, just west of Davie Road.
Authorities said Case, careening down the highway with three passengers in tow, rear-ended a Honda Accord as he switched lanes, causing the Audi to spin out, hit a curb and roll over, ejecting and killing his rear left passenger, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt. The victim’s name was redacted from court documents.
Three people inside the Honda were hurt and taken to HCA Florida University Hospital, while Case and his surviving passengers were also hurt and taken to Broward Health Medical Center.
Two passenger video recordings showed the Audi’s speedometer reading 155 and 156 mph before the crash, troopers said.
Vehicle data recorder data showed Case was going 129 mph at impact, the warrant states.
The speed limit on that stretch of State Road 84 is 45 mph.
According to the warrant, alcohol or drugs weren’t suspected as factors.
On Tuesday, Case appeared in Broward County court, where a judge found probable cause to charge him and gave him a $325,000 bond, along with orders to refrain from driving and submit to electronic monitoring.
Broward court records show Case has several traffic citations in the county dating back to 2022, some of which were dismissed for lack of prosecution.
Case was no longer listed in Broward Sheriff’s Office jail records as of Wednesday afternoon.
