The leaders plan to meet again in Johannesburg, South Africa, in November. The United States is set to host next year’s G20, but the city has yet to be announced. Suarez said Miami welcomes it.

“I think it’s in line with the trend of Miami being one of the most globally significant cities on the planet,” Suarez said.

The State Department accepted proposals from cities until Feb. 3. It’s unclear if Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was born in Miami, is involved in the selection process. Suarez sees the possibility of hosting the G20 as a win for the city.

“Being the center of focus of the world is always something that is beneficial,” Suarez said.

During his first term, President Donald trump pushed for a summit to be held at the Trump National Doral Golf Club. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, then Miami-Dade County mayor, welcomed the idea.

The U.S. will be leading the G20 from Dec. 1 to Nov. 30, 2026. The other G20 members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom.
