It happened around 3:50 p.m. on Feb. 12.
Aventura police said they responded to the hospital, located at 20900 Biscayne Blvd., after a reported domestic battery involving an elderly patient who was admitted for medical treatment.
The victim told police that her daughter, 56-year-old Rosemary Espinosa, of Hallandale Beach, became angry during a conversation about finances, according to an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News on Friday.
The victim said Espinosa asked for her checkbook and information about direct deposits. When she refused to answer, the daughter allegedly grabbed her by the upper chest, left shoulder and arm before punching her in the chest, the report stated.
Police said victim screamed for help after the alleged attack, prompting a registered nurse to enter the room.
The nurse said she found Espinosa hiding in the bathroom with the lights off, according to investigators. She was asked to leave the hospital and complied, they said.
Investigators said they photographed a large bruise on the victim’s upper left arm near her armpit and shoulder, which hospital staff said had not been previously visible.
Authorities said they interviewed Rosemary Espinosa at the Aventura Police Department on Tuesday.
According to the report, she waived her Miranda rights and admitted to being upset with her mother over a bank account issue but denied hitting her. She told police she hid in the bathroom to avoid being blamed.
Officers noted Espinosa also had an open bench warrant from June 2023 for failure to obey a lawful order, with a bond set at $5,000.
Jail records show she is facing one count of battery on a person 65 years or older.
As of Friday, Espinosa is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where her bond was listed as “to be set.”
