A Broward Sheriff’s Office detention deputy was arrested by BSO detectives on Monday in connection with a domestic violence incident involving a woman, authorities announced Wednesday.
BSO did not confirm the exact relationship between David Powell, 30, and the victim, but said a domestic disturbance between the two was reported around 7:20 p.m. Monday in Dania Beach.

BSO spokesman Carey Codd said deputies responded to the scene and Powell told them he had gotten into a verbal altercation with the woman.
According to Codd, detectives also spoke to the victim and learned that Powell had allegedly physically abused her.
“The investigation revealed that Powell forcefully slapped the victim in the face and ear causing her to lose hearing in the ear and beat her multiple times with a belt,” Codd said in a news release. “Examination at an area hospital showed that she suffered significant injuries requiring hospitalization.”
According to Codd, the victim told detectives that this was not the first time Powell has abused her, saying the abuse dated back to March 2024.
Codd confirmed that Powell was arrested on three counts of aggravated battery, one count of felony battery and four counts of domestic battery.
A risk protection order was also placed against Powell and several firearms belonging to him were confiscated, he said.
“Domestic violence is never acceptable. This is a serious issue that devastates the safety and wellbeing of individuals and families. Whenever anyone in this community, including employees of this agency, break the law, they will be held accountable for their actions,” Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a statement. “I want victims of domestic violence to know that they are not alone. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call 911 for help.”
Codd confirmed that Powell was hired by BSO on Dec. 6, 2021. He is currently on administrative leave without pay.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Powell remained held at the Broward County Main Jail on a $565,000 bond.
