MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A confrontation that turned deadly outside a Wawa in southwest Miami-Dade was caught on surveillance video, showing the moments leading up to a fatal shooting in broad daylight.
Authorities said the incident unfolded just after 5 p.m. Monday outside the gas station near Southwest 248th Street and 112th Avenue.
Miami-Dade deputies say two men were sitting in a parked vehicle just outside of the gas station for nearly one hour before they got into a heated argument that quickly turned physical — and then deadly.
Surveillance video released by investigators shows the two men exchanging words and bumping chests before one of those men, who deputies identified in an arrest report Tuesday as 43-year-old Pablo Juarez, pulls out a gun and fires at close range.
The victim, whose family identified him to Local 10 News Tuesday as Juan Carlos Hoyos, seen wearing a black bandana in the video, was critically injured in the shooting and later died after being airlifted to a nearby hospital, according to investigators.
Authorities say Juarez fled the scene in a gray Chevrolet 1500.
Deputies said they pulled him over in the truck about a mile and a half from the crime scene, near the intersection of Southwest 268th Street and Southwest 123rd Avenue. They said he had an empty gun holster in his pocket before being taken into custody.
They are still working to determine what sparked the deadly dispute. A motive remains unclear at this time.
Deputies said that the shooting happened in front of other customers at the store, adding to the urgency of the ongoing investigation.
Hoyos’ family also confirmed that he is a father of four children.
Jail records show Juarez is facing one count of second-degree murder with a weapon.
As of Tuesday, he is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
