Here is the latest on health risks babies, pregnant women face

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Researchers reported that about one in five babies are at risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS.

The JAMA Network Open, a monthly medical journal published by the American Medical Association, published the study attributing this to unsafe sleep positions.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants sleep on their backs until they turn one in a crib with a firm mattress and a fitted sheet.

On the topic of babies, the United Nations released the Trends in maternal mortality report showing a 40% global decline in maternal deaths between 2000 and 2023.

The UN also reported concerns about the effects of humanitarian funding cuts on the very healthcare programs that have made this possible.

The concern is higher in the sub-Saharan Africa region where about 70% of the world’s maternal deaths happened in 2023. Other areas of concern include Latin America and the Caribbean.
