PLANTATION, Fla. – Authorities in Plantation announced a major development in a “decades-old missing person” case after they said a submerged vehicle containing “skeletal remains” was discovered Sunday afternoon in a small retention pond.
Plantation police said the vehicle was located around 3:48 p.m. near the intersection of West Sunrise Boulevard and North Flamingo Road.
6 p.m. report:
According to investigators, the remains were found inside the car, which had apparently gone undetected underwater since the year 2000.
The discovery was made with the help of Sunshine State Sonar, a volunteer group dedicated to solving missing persons cases involving vehicles that vanished along with their occupants.
Sky 10 aerial footage showed police and the medical examiner’s forensic response unit processing the scene Monday.
4 p.m. report:
Investigators could be seen digging and sifting through the area, now considered a crime scene.
Authorities have not disclosed any information on the person’s age, gender or identity at this time.
Plantation Police detectives have taken custody of the remains and the vehicle as they work to identify the victim and determine what happened.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” wrote Sunshine State Sonar in a statement on Facebook Monday.
Anyone with information about the case is urged to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
