According to Miami police, Macy Valadez, 28, was taken into custody on Friday after police say he caused a deadly head-on collision while speeding in a Chevrolet Corvette.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 near Northwest 67th Court and West Flagler Street.

Investigators said Valadez was driving a 2021 Corvette westbound on West Flagler when he tried to pass a slower vehicle by merging into oncoming traffic.

They said his car slammed head-on into a 2016 Honda Civic in the eastbound turn lane.

Authorities said driver of the Civic, a 70-year-old man whose name has not been released, was taken to Jackson West Medical Center in Doral, where he died from his injuries at 1:43 a.m. on Feb. 13.

Police said surveillance video obtained from nearby businesses corroborated investigators’ findings, showing the Civic attempting to turn while Valadez’s Corvette approached at a high rate of speed.

An analysis of the Corvette’s event data recorder showed Valadez was traveling at 100 mph eight seconds before the crash and peaked at 108 mph shortly after, with he speed dropping to 70 mph one second before impact. The collision speed was estimated at 55 mph, police said.

They said evidence at the scene, including skid marks and damage patterns, matched the sequence of events captured on video and supported the data retrieved from the Corvette.

The Miami Police Department’s traffic homicide unit took over the investigation shortly after the victim was pronounced dead.

Valadez was arrested Friday after invoking his Miranda rights, police said.

Jail records show he is facing one count of vehicular homicide while driving in a reckless manner.

As of Monday, Valadez was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a magistrate hold, with his bond set at $250,000.
