According to an email from the university that went out to students and faculty, a portion of Mahoney-Pearson’s outdoor patio was damaged around 6 p.m. Sunday as strong thunderstorms moved through the area.

“Obviously, when you see your dorm building collapsing in on itself, it’s not too fun to look at,” sophomore Dylan Prefontaine said. “My best friend used to live in there. I actually visited that dorm when I came here originally, so it’s kinda crazy to see that collapse in on itself, but again, it’s an old building.”

The dorm is the university’s second oldest housing building.

“The University is aware of the incident at Mahoney-Pearson Residential College that occurred Sunday evening following storms that impacted the area,” a spokesperson for the university told Local 10 News in an email Monday. “University Facilities, Housing and Residential Life, and UMPD immediately responded. There were no reported injuries, and we are securing the outdoor patio area to assess the damage.”

For now, students who live in that hall are asked to use two different entrances.

Weather not only disrupted operations on campus, but at South Florida airports as well.

On Monday morning, Miami International Airport reported that there have been 38 delays and 28 cancelations so far.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport reported that 33 flights have been delayed and 12 canceled.

And before Miami’s 25th Ultra Music Festival wrapped up Sunday, festivalgoers were forced to find shelter after messages popped up on screens telling guests to take cover from the thunderstorms.

The festival was delayed an hour, and at one point, water gushed onto one of the stages.

The event eventually went on, wrapping up at 11 p.m.
