MIAMI – A west Miami-Dade County preparatory school is mourning the death of a sophomore student-athlete.
Lucas Osuna, who was just 15 years old, played water polo for Belen Jesuit Preparatory School and died suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday.
The Miami Whitecaps Water Polo Club told Local 10 News that Osuna had played with their club team since sixth grade and that parents and referees attempted to perform lifesaving measures on him that were ultimately unsuccessful.
The club said in a statement:
“Lucas Osuna, you will forever be in our hearts. We are going to miss you. An amazing, smart, kind hearted, and hilarious person.”
Online, family and friends described Osuna as kind and genuine.
The school also released a statement, which read, in part:
“We will pray for the repose of his soul and the comfort of those he loved and loved him.”
Osuna’s father shared a family photo while saying in a statement that in true super hero fashion, he embodied perseverance, determination, and overcoming all the obstacles life threw in his way.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said he was a longtime family friend, writing “To the entire Belen community, and especially to Lucas’ family and friends, please know that Miami stands with you in this time of unimaginable loss.”
There are some reports indicating that this happened during a water polo tournament, but the exact cause of death still remains unclear.
