SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – The devil is in the details felt real for investigators in the case of a 30-year-old man and his 23-year-old sister who were both facing charges in Miami-Dade County.

Federal and state special agents reported Anthony Aleman worked for the U.S. Postal Service out of the Country Lakes Post Office and Shirley Aguirre at a cardiologist’s office in South Miami during the crimes.

Aleman, a mail carrier for over three years, had called in sick with COVID-19 several times during the pandemic before his supervisor reported noticing two “test results had the same test numbers” as he attempted to get sick-time pay, records show.

Investigators later reported finding that Aguirre, who lived with her brother in South Miami, forged a doctor’s signature and documents that falsely listed him as a patient at the cardiologist’s office where she worked, records show.

According to an arrest warrant in the case, Aguirre resigned from her job answering phones and Aleman vanished while ignoring U.S. Postal Service letters asking him to report for an interview during an investigation.

Special agents with the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the case. In 2023, prosecutors filed the cases and a judge issued an arrest warrant.

Aleman faced two counts of forgery, two counts of uttering a forged instrument, two counts of cheating, and one count of fraudulently using or possessing someone else’s personal identification information.

Aguirre faced two counts of forgery and one count of fraudulently using or possessing someone else’s personal identification information.

On Thursday, Aguirre was arrested and correctional deputies booked her at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. She appeared in court on Friday and a judge set her bond at $15,000.

After Aleman’s arrest on Feb. 6, correctional deputies released him on a $7,500 bond about two days later. His next hearing is at 9 a.m., on May 27. Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Milton Hirsch is presiding over both cases.
