Parking issues, construction, broken walkways await travelers at Miami International Airport

MIAMI – From parking a vehicle to moving around the terminals, life for travelers could be easier at Miami International Airport.

Local 10 News’ Christina Vazquez spoke with John Williams, one of the few to score a Flamingo Garage parking spot at MIA ahead of this weekend’s start to a busy Spring Break travel season.

“I drove six floors so I am parked on sixth floor,” he said about an hour after MIA said that all of their garages were at capacity. “It is full, but I found an empty spot.”

Traveler Chris Gallagher was not as fortunate as Williams.

”I don’t even know, there is no clear signage, we don’t have people around,” said Gallagher. “All these signs say it is overflow parking, right? But it also says no parking overnight, so I am looking if there is someone who can tell me if I can park here or not get towed.”

Williams had just dropped his wife and three children off at the terminal and was entering the overflow lot at the Tri-Rail Station.

“I can’t believe the parking lot is full today,” he said. “I had to drop my babies off, we trying to go to Mexico, just for the weekend, and now we have to deal with this. I mean Fort Lauderdale, I live closer, amazing parking lot. I hope we get some restructuring here and things get better because I was surprised by this and it has taken an hour just to find a spot. I don’t know if I am going to make the flight. I had no idea (the lots were all full), I didn’t get an alert or anything.”

For those who do manage to find parking, they should also plan ahead for some moving walkways that still don’t work.

Additionally, the third level Flamingo Garage pedestrian bridge is temporarily closed for repairs.

You can still use the Dolphin Garage pedestrian bridge to access to the terminal, and if you need to return a rental car before boarding your flight, leave time to catch a shuttle bus because the MIA Mover is still out of operation.

“It would have been great to know that there were parking issues because that can be an hour delay, even more,” said Gallagher.
