PLANTATION, Fla. – A new cell phone video and a witness who didn’t want to be identified offer a new window into a deadly crash related to a police pursuit.
It happened Wednesday night along University Drive in Plantation.
“I saw about two or three people that were taken away on stretchers and then there was the guy actually driving who passed away,” said the witness. “We heard the sirens coming down on the other side of the road before we heard the boom. When I looked out, I could see police grabbing their guns, pointing their gun at the car.”
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a driver was going the wrong way on University Drive just after 7 p.m. “actively fleeing from a Florida Highway Patrol trooper.”
That driver caused a multi-vehicle accident that resulted in their death. None of the other drivers were seriously hurt, authorities said.
In addition to FHP units, a Broward Sheriff’s Office Dania Beach unit was also observed on scene. Local 10 News is working to confirm the nature of BSO’s involvement.
Additional questions remain as to why FHP was actively pursuing the vehicle in the first place.
Investigators have yet to disclose details about the events leading up to the trooper initiating a pursuit.
According to FHP’s official pursuit policy, which was revised in March of 2024, “Violators who make a conscious decision to flee from law enforcement also make a conscious decision to put the community, the member(s), and the public in danger, hoping to avoid being held responsible for their willful violation of the law.”
