According to an arrest report, Armani Alexis Rodgers was driving a gray Nissan Altima on Northeast 79th Street Monday night when she struck a gas-powered scooter at the intersection of Fifth Avenue.
Police said the Altima dragged the scooter several feet before coming to a final rest.
According to the report, Rodgers and a female passenger abandoned the car and took off running after the crash.
But they returned seconds later to remove the license plate from the vehicle, authorities said.
Police said both were gone by the time officers arrived.
According to the report, two people were riding the scooter at the time of the crash.
The female passenger on the scooter suffered severe head trauma and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where she remains in critical condition.
According to the report, the owner of the Altima contacted police Wednesday and informed them that Rodgers, who is her niece, had taken her vehicle without permission and had been driving the car the night of the crash.
Police said Rodgers then surrendered to police later that day.
A statement she made to detectives was redacted from the publicly released report.
Rodgers faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash causing serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of a crash without serious injury.
As of Thursday morning, Rodgers remained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center where her bond was listed as “to be set.”
