Deputies seek suspect after 24-year-old church band member gunned down in Homestead

Family believes victim was robbed of his wallet while walking to church before he was shot dead

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office are looking for those responsible for the shooting death of a 24-year-old man in Homestead.

Deputies said Alvaro Funes Salas was shot and killed around 9 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Southwest Second Street and Southwest Third Avenue.

Authorities have not released a motive in Salas’ death but his brother believes he was robbed of his wallet while walking to church.

Salas’ family members said he was a saxophone player in a church band.

“They took the wallet with $80 and the only thing left was the saxophone and that’s it,” his brother told Local 10′s Bridgette Matter in Spanish. “I am hurt.”

On Thursday afternoon, two people placed flowers near the spot where his body was found.

Authorities said the shooting happened in an industrial area with no surveillance cameras capturing the incident.

Business owners told Local 10 News they were closed at the time of the incident.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

Tipsters can remain anonymous and receive a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
