HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – The Hollywood Police Department released surveillance video Wednesday of a man forcing a 20-year-old woman out of her Mercury Milan and driving away after he had failed to carjack a 64-year-old man’s red Ford F-150.
Local 10 News reported on Thursday how a license plate reader helped police officers track down Edward Dawson to arrest him last week near Fort Lauderdale. He remained behind bars Wednesday.
The surveillance videos released show Dawson, 34, of Pompano Beach, inside the McDonald’s restaurant and outside in the drive-through area where the carjacking happened on March 5, according to police.
Dawson, of Pompano Beach, injured Kurt Decker, who fought back, during the attempted carjacking at about 7:45 a.m., on March 5, in the Oakwood Plaza shopping center, off Stirling Road and Interstate 95, police said.
“My nose was bleeding. All the side of my face is fairly sore,” Decker told Local 10 News last week, adding that a good Samaritan helped him fight off Dawson.
Dawson then targeted Khila Darrisaw, who was waiting to order food in the fast-food restaurant’s drive-through lane at 2690 Stirling Road when he opened the passenger-side door and got in, according to police
“I need this car,” Dawson told Darrisaw before attacking her, according to the arrest report.
“He was shoving me like out of the car and opened the door and shoved me off and drove off,” Darrisaw said last week.
Fort Lauderdale police officers and Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of Sunrise Boulevard and Northwest Ninth Court where Dawson was arrested.
A judge denied Dawson’s bond and he faced charges of carjacking, aggravated battery, and burglary with assault or battery.
