POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A 50-year-old man who was born in New York and lives in Pompano Beach stands accused of fraud Wednesday in Broward County, records show.

According to a Florida Department of Financial Services detective’s report, Dwight Sherlock Martinez used DSM Waterproofing, a company he registered in 2020, for the alleged insurance fraud.

The agency’s detective accused Martinez of lying to his company’s workers’ compensation insurance carriers while he cashed over $1.7 million in checks from 2021 to last year, records show.

“Martinez knowingly misrepresented his payroll which was material to the computation of his [worker’s compensation] insurance premium,” the detective wrote

In one of the five incidents that the detective cited, Martinez cashed a $996,000 check from Lions Insurance Company when the remuneration was $42,000, records show.

According to the investigators, Martinez mostly used the Tip Top Checking Cashing Store in Pompano Beach during the fraud.

Court records show a judge issued a warrant for his arrest when prosecutors filed a case against him on Feb. 24 for May 2022 offenses cited by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office on two counts of workers' compensation fraud.

Inmate records show Martinez was arrested and booked at the main jail on Tuesday. He appeared in court on Wednesday, and a judge set his bond at $14,000. Broward County Circuit Judge Edward Merrigan is set to preside over the case.
