Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies said they responded to a fight involving a gun in the 2700 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard just before noon on Tuesday.

At the scene, deputies spoke with the victim, an armed security guard at the plaza, who reported that his ex-girlfriend, Micaela Yerlas Coronato, 26, arrived at his workplace, according to an arrest affidavit.

The victim told authorities that he and Coronato had been in a relationship for six years and had recently broken up. When Coronato showed up at the plaza, deputies said the two got into an argument that continued as they walked toward the west side of the building.

Investigators said that shortly after, Coronato’s current boyfriend, 30-year-old Steven Rashad Rainey, of Fort Lauderdale, approached the victim during the argument, threw a punch, and the two started fighting.

As the fight between both men went to the ground, deputies said Coronato grabbed the victim’s gun from his holster and pointed it at him, asking Rainey, “Should I shoot him?”

The victim, still on the ground, reported hearing two clicks from his gun while Coronato held it at him, the affidavit stated.

Authorities said Coronato attempted to fire the weapon, but it did not discharge. She then threw the handgun on the ground before fleeing the scene with Rainey in a silver Lexus, deputies confirmed.

According to deputies, Rainey encouraged Coronato to shoot the victim while she was pointing the gun at him. The only reason the victim was not shot, they said, was because the gun’s chamber was empty, though the magazine contained six rounds.

They said Rainey is also on active felony probation until July 2027 for a previous charge of throwing a deadly missile.

Jail records show both suspects are charged with premeditated attempted murder, while Coronato faces an additional charge of armed robbery with a firearm.

As of Friday, Coronato was being held without bond at the Paul Rein Detention Facility and Rainey was being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail.
