‘I just want to be with my family:’ Man who shot ex-fiancée walks out of a jail a free man

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A South Florida man acquitted in the shooting of his ex-fiancée was released from jail early Thursday morning and exclusively spoke with Local 10 News following a second acquittal in connection with a separate domestic violence case.

Gayle Blount, 55, was released from the North Broward Bureau jail in Pompano Beach around 3:30 a.m.

He spoke to Local 10, saying he plans to spend time with his family after spending four years behind bars while awaiting his two trials.

“She should be ashamed of herself because there are real women of domestic violence and she is not it,” Blount said about his accuser and ex-fiancée, Bridgette Knighton.

Blount’s release comes after he was found not guilty of misdemeanor battery.

“I will discuss anything further with my attorney, thank you,” he said.

Knighton was in disbelief Wednesday after Blount was found not guilty for a second time.

“That’s not an innocent man,” she said. “He’s going to do it again.”

Most recently, Blount was being held in a Broward County jail for a domestic violence incident that was reported at a Denny’s on Pines Boulevard back in February 2021.

Police said Blount was standing over the victim, yelling at her when he pushed her onto one of the tables.

He was found not guilty in the case on Wednesday.

“I’m sad that the system failed me. There’s so many people that love and support me, but the system failed me,” Knighton said.

Blount was also found not guilty of an attempted murder case involving Knighton. Knighton showed Local 10 the scars she says are from the gunshots Blount fired at her back in 2021.

“You’re going to have to bury your loved ones if these laws don’t change,” Knighton said.

Blount said in court that he was acting in self-defense when he shot Knighton multiple times at a Miami Gardens apartment complex.

A jury in Miami-Dade County found him not guilty in that case on Valentine ‘s Day.

“I’ve already said that a restraining order is just a piece of paper. If he’s dumb enough to come after me, then it really be self-defense, and not something I made up to save my life,” Knighton said.

Blount was happy to be out of jail Thursday as he was picked up by his daughter.

“I just want to be with my family!” he said.

Blount’s attorney sent Local 10 News a statement, which read in part, “In both trials, the defense team brought the truth to the jury. That she in fact was the aggressor and the instigator. We hope that she can move on and find peace in her life as Mr. Blount is looking to do the same.”
