MIRAMAR, Fla. – Family members are seeking justice after a 31-year-old man who they say suffers from mental illness was pistol-whipped outside a Miramar convenience store after an act of kindness.
Witnesses told police that the man was holding the door open for a woman when the suspect came up from behind him with a gun.
Now police and loved ones are asking for the public’s help finding the person who committed the crime.
“People typically don’t attack strangers,” said Miramar police Chief Delrish Moss. “In this case it looks like an unprovoked attack.”
It happened on Feb. 23.
Rashad, as the victim is being identified, was simply holding the front door open for a woman when a man in a parked car then got out and ran after him, striking the victim in the back of his head with a handgun, police said.
Police say the man then loaded his gun and took aim.
Miramar police have since released a flyer that stated the suspect was last seen in an older model white sedan.
“If he’ll do this unprovoked, what else might he do,” said Moss.
Anyone with information or who thinks they recognize the suspect is urged to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
