Current Chairman Talbert Cypress, who became chairman in 2021, confirmed the news on Instagram, releasing a statement on behalf of the Tribe in honor of Billy Cypress, who was first elected to the Miccosukee Business Council in 1973 and then served 26 years as chairman.

“During his tenure, Billy Cypress oversaw the establishment of the Tribe’s gaming operations, the expansion and professionalization of many of the Tribe’s administrative departments, and became the leading advocate for the Tribe and for the Everglades,” the statement read. “Many in South Florida first became aware of the Tribe through his advocacy and outreach.”

The Tribe did not immediately confirm his cause of death, however sources told Local 10 News that he had been battling cancer.

In the statement Friday, Talbert Cypress expressed his deep respect and admiration for his predecessor, touting his numerous accomplishments.

“Thank you for your humor, your dedication, and your service,” he wrote.

Billy Cypress is survived by his sons, daughters, grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews.

The time and location of the late Chairman’s funeral service has yet to be announced.
