They said the delay will allow for further traffic studies to be conducted.

MCSO Sheriff Rick Ramsay was informed Tuesday afternoon that the traffic management plan associated with the FKAA project, which had been coordinated with FDOT, is now under reassessment.

MCSO was not involved in the development of the traffic management plan, according to Adam Linhardt, the sheriff department’s spokesperson.

Authorities said the ongoing long-term water main project by FKAA and FDOT has led to major traffic congestion on U.S. 1 in the Upper Keys, with delays of up to two hours and five-mile backups in both directions.

Linhardt confirmed that the traffic management plan, which was approved by FDOT and implemented by FKAA and its contractor, did not involve MCSO.

Ramsay voiced his frustration with the situation, noting the significant impact on emergency response times.

“This is frustrating for our citizens who have to sit and wait in traffic, as does the Sheriff’s Office,” he said. “The traffic situation is adversely affecting public safety response for police, fire, and rescue. I have expressed these concerns with FDOT and FKAA.”

MCSO officials added that they have received numerous calls from both residents and tourists. They are urging the public not to use 911 for traffic-related inquiries, as it ties up emergency lines.
