BSO announced Friday morning that Reece Anglin, 32, of Lauderhill, was arrested on Valentine’s Day by Tampa police.
He was initially booked into the Hillsborough County Jail and was transferred to the Broward Main Jail on Thursday.
Jail records show he faces two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and has an immigration hold.
According to a BSO news release, one deputy and one Lauderhill police officer fired their weapons during the incident that occurred shortly before 6 p.m. on Feb. 12 at the Calypso Cay apartments, in the 4100 block of Northwest 21st Street.
“During the operation, two armed adult males confronted two members of law enforcement and pointed guns at them,” the news release prepared by BSO spokesman Carey Codd stated. “The BSO deputy drew his duty weapon, identified himself as a law enforcement officer and issued commands for the subjects to drop their firearms and get on the ground. Neither of the subjects complied. Both subjects then fired at the law enforcement officers, and the officers returned fire. One of the armed subjects, Tafari Elliot, was struck and fled. The second subject, Anglin, also fled.”
Codd said Elliot, 28, of Lauderhill, was taken into custody within the apartment complex and was treated for his injuries at Broward Health Medical Center.
Codd said the deputy and police officer were not injured.
According to Codd, several guns were recovered at the scene by detectives.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the use of force aspect of the shooting, while BSO’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the alleged criminal actions of Elliot and Anglin.
“As per BSO policy, the deputy that fired his weapon was placed on administrative assignment following the shooting,” Codd said in the news release.
Codd confirmed that the operation at the apartment complex involved members of BSO’s Gang Investigations Task Force, “which involves law enforcement members from BSO, Lauderhill Police and other municipalities.”
