Officials said Lighthouse Point police responded to the home in the 2600 block of Northeast 49th Street at around 5:15 p.m. and found the victim with a gunshot wound. Medics took him to an area hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Authorities identified him Thursday evening as Bernabe Rodriguez, 41, of Delray Beach.

5:30 p.m. report

Rodriguez, known to friends and family as “Kiko,” was remembered as a beloved figure in the barbering community. Loved ones shared tributes on social media, calling him a “good friend” and a “young entrepreneur.”

Video taken by neighbors shows a law enforcement officer walking a handcuffed woman to a squad car after the shooting. No one has been arrested.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has since taken over the investigation from the city’s police department.

“According to investigators, the shooter remained on (the) scene, was detained for questioning and later released,” BSO spokesperson Gerdy St. Louis said in a news release Thursday evening. “Detectives say upon completion of their investigation, the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office for review.”

Neighbor Joey Stazzone told Local 10 News the shooting came as a shock.

“It kind of shocks me because this is a very peaceful neighborhood -- not much goes on -- so it’s kind of crazy how this happened, just like all of a sudden,” Stazzone said. “Honestly, cops are always here, just like, they are always at this hour specifically and it’s not like a rare occurrence, but this really surprised me.”

A detective with the Lighthouse Point Police Department later provided a list of calls at the address. According to that list, the city’s police officers have been there nine times since Feb. 8, 2021.

“Domestic violence is something we should be more aware of,” said neighbor Alex Bordonaro.

Calls ranged from a verbal argument between siblings and medical emergencies to a suspicious vehicle and an uninvited person. Still, there was no record of “any calls involving the victim and the alleged shooter,” Detective Sgt. Andrew Gianino told Local 10 News.

Deputies haven’t released further details on the circumstances that led up to the shooting.

They did describe it as an “isolated incident.”

Editor’s note: This story has been updated with information clarifying the extent and scope of police calls to the home.
