FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man who hit and killed a pedestrian walking along State Road A1A on Fort Lauderdale Beach in late August was driving drunk at nearly three times the legal limit, according to police. Months after the crash, he’s now facing three charges.

Fort Lauderdale police arrested Kareem Holness, 29, of Pompano Beach, on Wednesday in connection with the Aug. 29 crash at the Sunrise Boulevard intersection.
A brief arrest report — which doesn’t identify the victim — states that Holness, driving east on Sunrise Boulevard, went straight through the T-intersection in his 2007 Volkswagen Jetta and hit the pedestrian walking along A1A, then the seawall.
The pedestrian was “thrown out onto the sand” and killed, police said.
Police said Holness, who had “bloodshot eyes,” was “unsteady on his feet” and had “slurred speech,” smelled of alcohol.
A blood test collected pursuant to a warrant revealed that Holness’ blood alcohol content was 0.22% — nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08% — less than 45 minutes after the deadly wreck.
Holness, facing two DUI manslaughter charges and a count of DUI causing property damage, was being held in the Broward Main Jail on a $151,000 bond as of Thursday.
