MIAMI – Miami police arrested a man Friday after they said he cut a woman’s throat twice while raping her in the city’s Overtown neighborhood in late January.
Accused perpetrator Kevin Marvelle Smith, 54, is facing four felony charges, including attempted murder and armed sexual battery.

According to police, the victim and Smith, who is homeless, were acquaintances. On Jan. 30, police said the two got off a Miami trolley after the victim told Smith she had “nowhere to go.”
An arrest report states he then took her to an apartment in the Rainbow Village public housing complex near Northwest 20th Street and Third Avenue, where she fell asleep.
She then woke up to Smith “on top of her with a pink flashlight and a kitchen knife,” the report states.
“Panties, bra, shirt and pants off now,” police said he told her at knifepoint before raping her.
Police wrote that when the victim tried to move away from him, Smith told her that “if she moves, he will hurt her.”
“During the assault, (Smith) used the knife and cut the victim’s throat twice, causing a laceration,” the report states. “Afterwards, (he) used shoe laces to tie the victim’s hands behind her back and tied her feet together, then fled from the apartment. She was able to break free, leaving her belongings behind, and left the area.”
Police said a walkthrough of the apartment backed up the woman’s account; they said they found a pair of shoes with missing laces, among other things.
The report states that detectives and the woman identified Smith as the suspect and police apprehended him at Northwest Third Avenue and 14th Street.
Authorities said Smith made an admission, which was redacted from the report, but “he denied cutting the victim’s throat and the other allegations.”
Smith was being held without bond in the Metrowest Detention Center as of Monday afternoon.
