According to jail records, Calvin Dials was arrested Saturday on charges of first-degree murder, battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

An arrest warrant states that Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 200 block of Northeast 35th Street in Oakland Park Friday afternoon in reference to a shooting.

Deputies said Dials’ mother called 911 to report that her son had just shot someone in front of her home.

According to the warrant, Dials fled the scene on foot after the shooting and the victim, identified only as an adult Black male, was found lying in the driveway of the home near a black F-150 pickup truck.

He had been shot multiple times in the torso.

Authorities said the victim’s fiancée, who shares a 1 ½-year-old daughter with the suspect, witnessed the shooting and was rendering aid to the victim when deputies arrived.

Deputies then performed “life-saving techniques” on the victim before Oakland Park Fire Rescue arrived and transported the victim to Broward Health Medical Center, where he later died, the warrant stated.

According to the warrant, the victim and his fiancée were dropping off her daughter at Dials’ home.

Deputies said the victim stayed in the driver’s seat of the truck as his fiancée was dropping off her daughter with the girl’s father and grandmother.

For unknown reasons, Dials became angry and exited the home despite his child’s mother trying to prevent him from doing so, and began walking “aggressively” toward the pickup truck, authorities said.

Deputies said the woman yelled at her fiancé to remain inside the truck and to lock the doors and placed herself between Dials and her fiancé, who was still sitting in the driver’s seat.

According to the warrant, Dials then grabbed his daughter’s mother and threw her to the side, at which point the woman’s fiancé immediately got out of his truck.

Dials then pulled out a gun from his waistband and shot the victim three or four times, authorities said.

According to the warrant, the victim did not have any weapons on him when he was shot.

The surviving victim told detectives that she and her fiancé had driven down from Tampa with her two children to drop off her daughter at Dials’ home.

But she said Dials was angry when they arrived and immediately told her when he saw her, “Where this n***** at?”

The woman told detectives that she pleaded with Dials to not start any fights, but he pushed her out of the way to try to get to her fiancé.

She said her fiancé asked Dials, “What is your problem?” prior to being shot.

According to the warrant, Dials initially followed his child’s mother after the shooting as she was running away from him, yelling at her, “ya’ll mother****ers think this is a game!”

Deputies said he stopped following her after she fell down on the roadway, fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.

Dials was arrested the next day and a Smith and Wesson 9mm gun was found inside his backpack, the warrant stated.

As of Wednesday morning, Dials was being held at the Broward County Main Jail without bond.
