Man jailed for attempted murder after charging Key West cop with ‘large knife,’ police say

It happened just 3 months before he was set to get off probation

Joseph Silva (MCSO)

KEY WEST, Fla. – A man is facing attempted murder and aggravated assault charges after Key West police said he charged at an officer with a “large knife” and then barricaded himself in an apartment over the weekend.

Joseph Ignacio Silva, 29, was booked into jail early Sunday morning, according to online records. The convicted felon was on probation at the time of his arrest.

According to the Key West Police Department, an officer responding to a domestic incident in the 1600 block of Ellsberg Court in the Poinciana Plaza neighborhood encountered Silva, who “ran outside and charged him with a large knife.”

Police said Silva then retreated and locked himself inside an apartment, barricading himself until specialized units were able to get him to surrender peacefully.

It’s not Silva’s first run-in with the law. He’s had a history of crimes in the Florida Keys, including past instances of battering law enforcement. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office records show he’s been arrested more than a dozen times and state records show he’s served time in prison.

His probation term was scheduled to end on May 13.

Silva, back in the familiar confines of the Monroe County jail, was being held without bond as of Monday afternoon.
