BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – One man is dead after being shot on Interstate 95 Sunday night.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred in the southbound lanes of the highway, north of Oakland Park Boulevard.
Investigators were spotted surrounding an SUV on the highway after the shooting.
Noon report:
The Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed the shooting was reported shortly after 6 p.m.
Authorities said BSO Oakland Park District deputies, Florida Highway Patrol troopers, Oakland Park Fire Rescue and Fort Lauderdale police officers all responded to the scene and found the victim, identified Monday as Xavier Williams, 35.
Williams was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
“According to detectives, preliminary investigation revealed that a physical dispute occurred at a Pompano Beach residence between Xavier Williams and an adult female prior to the shooting on I-95,” a BSO spokesperson said in a news release. “The adult female left with another adult male. At some point on I-95, the adult male discharged his weapon, striking Williams.”
Authorities said the shooter remained at the scene and cooperated with detectives, answering their questions and claiming he acted in self-defense. They said multiple others were also interviewed.
All southbound lanes of I-95 in the area were shut down for roughly four hours as BSO homicide detectives worked the scene, causing a significant traffic backup.
A Ford Escape was eventually towed away before all lanes were reopened.
BSO confirmed that at the conclusion of their investigation, the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether charges will be filed.
