Fundraiser to help homeless pets in Broward needs more support

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The annual VCA Walk for the Animals is about a week away in Fort Lauderdale.

For the 35th year, the walk will serve as the Humane Society of Broward County’s most important fundraiser and it needs more support.

“We rely on donations from people and companies that want to make a difference for the animals and every dollar makes a difference,” said Cherie Wachter, of Humane Society of Broward County.

Thousands of animals in need benefit from veterinary care, food, shelter, and other needs. A $10 donation buys formula, $15 covers a vaccine, $20 a microchip, $25 a heartworm test, and $100 covers sterilization.

“These animals are really looking for a home. They know what it’s like to either be left or abandoned or not cared for, so they welcome it and they feel someone is going to take care of them,” Erica Dennis said.

The in-person registration desk opens at 7:30 a.m., and the walk starts at 9 a.m., at Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park at 80 Las Olas Circle.

“Last year we placed more than 4,600 animals, so that’s adopted animals, animals that were returned to their owners because they came in as a stray, they had a microchip so we were able to track it,” Wachter said.
