This unique program, spearheaded by Miami-Dade Commissioner Oliver Gilbert, offers students an opportunity to visit historic locations in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia — key stops along the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.

Participants will walk in the footsteps of history, visiting sites like the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the National Civil Rights Museum, connecting with the stories of a movement that shaped the nation’s future.

”You are talking about the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the Civil Rights Museum. You are talking about all these places where history was made. I want to show them where history was made,” said Gilbert in a news release on Wednesday.

“Sometimes we take for granted the exposure that we have as adults. They will have it eventually. I want them to have it a lot sooner. I want them to know how we got where we are and that will help them become pioneers of where we are going,” he added.

If you are a student that lives in or attends high school in Miami-Dade County District 1, you have until Friday to apply for the program.

Students will be notified if they’ve been selected by Jan. 31.

The trip is scheduled to run from March 23 to March 29, offering a week of immersive learning and inspiration.
